Process Engineer Carbon Credit

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Specialty Chemicals Process Engineer will focus on maximizing the companies carbon credit potential resulting from the abatement of greenhouse gases from Adipic & Nitric Acid plants. A secondary responsibility will be to lead new process and product development for both near-term and long-term growth opportunities within the Specialty Chemicals product portfolio. TARGETED OUTCOMES

Identifies and develops process solutions which meet the performance and flexibility needs of the business.

Develop a collaborative working relationship with Site Leadership and the Manufacturing organization.

Utilize Six Sigma and Operational Excellence principles to drive process to best demonstrated, Entitlement, performance in the areas of capacity, yields, energy, safety, quality, and sustainability.

Develops creative process designs for new chemicals business with phased capital approaches. Applies approved design practices, work processes, and design tools to develop innovative, cost-effective solutions. Effectively applies the new technology development and project stage-gate processes to complete project deliverables.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Work closely with multiple internal and external parties to develop a strategy to maximize carbon credit potential for the organization. Actively participate in the implementation of new greenhouse gas abatement technologies across the organization Provide process engineering packages to deliver the Capital AOP Develop innovative process designs that support business objectives Proactively manage project milestone delivery, identify potential obstacles and issues, devise contingency plans, and engage stakeholders at necessary decision points

Develop process flow diagrams, heat & mass balances, piping & instrument diagrams, equipment specifications, and economic estimates from initial concept to final design

Model processes as part of the overall sizing/design processes Maintain product and company reputation by complying with federal and state regulations Improve safety & environmental performance, design for inherent process safety, leverage industry best practices and RAGAGEP in process designs

Monitor work for compliance to applicable codes and accepted engineering practices and standards.

TEAM

Reports to: Sr. Engineering Manager, Specialty Chemicals

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. Advanced degree considered a plus. 10+ years of combined R&D and Process Engineering experience within the chemicals/petrochemical industry. Lower level of experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis based on relevant experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Knowledge of computer systems and software related to process control and optimization. At a minimum, candidate should have experience with Aspen suite of software’s, Excel spreadsheet functions with macros; JMP, SAS, or Minitab, or a similar statistical analysis program; and data collection programs. Self-motivated leader, capable of leading process design teams and interfacing with cross functional teams. Strong technical and analytical skills with the ability to innovate and creatively solve complex problems. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work with cross-functional teams to take an idea from concept to commercialization. Ability to influence senior management. Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Proven track record of delivering results. Proficient in applying basic chemical engineering principals such as heat transfer, vapor-liquid equilibria, mass transfer, solids separation, chemical reactions, fluid flow mechanics, and thermodynamics to the process design of new or modified chemical production facilities. Proficient in the process design of equipment including pressure vessels, distillation columns, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, control valves, atmospheric tanks, solids separation equipment, pressure relief devices, etc. Proficient in the use of process design software and simulation packages such as Aspen HYSYS.

PREFERRED SKILLS

Experience with interpreting and following EPA regulations for emissions monitoring such as 40 CFR PART 75 (CEMS, DAHS, RATA, Missing Data Substitution). Experience with process auditing and implementing compliance plans. Petrochemical process design – slurry reactors, distillation design, heat exchangers. Specialty chemicals process design – batch reactors, solids separation, crystallization, centrifuges. Specific experience with Aspen Plus, Aspen EDR, AFT Software (Fathom & Arrow), and iPRSM. Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities. Experience using Six-Sigma tools. Previous manufacturing experience and closure of PHA items. Process design of projects $500k – $50M Expertise and industry subject matter expert – industry standards committees, AIChE, new process/product development, etc. PE license.
